Emergency Declared in Pursat as River Rises

PURSAT: The Pursat River has risen to alarming levels following heavy rains that started on September 26. The provincial department says the water level is higher than it has been in many years and advised residents and authorities to be prepared in case of emergency.

The Pursat Department of Water Resources and Meteorology released a statement to the public on September 29 calling for extreme caution as the waterline has risen to 5.54 meters, exceeding the five meter line of safety.

The river has received water from the Cardamom Mountains and the Thom River, causing water levels to gradually rise and cause flooding the in the Pursat Province. The department said that those living along the river should be extra careful and be ready to evacuate. The department also told local authorities to stand ready to assist potential flood victims.

Yesterday, a beloved cafe was completely swept away by floodwaters near the Dangrek Mountains.

The central Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology said that Cambodia was minimally affected by a prolonged low pressure system over the Mekong Basin, bordering Thailand and Laos, incurring moderate southwest monsoon winds.

The situation will cause a slowdown in rainfall with the capital and provinces having a 50-60% chance of rain over the coming days.
